So you just started blogging and want to start collaborating with brands. The members of my facebook group (https://www.facebook.com/groups/233981357086371/) always ask me this question and here’s a list of things I have done to grow my following, create better content and start collaborating with brands.
I didn’t start taking blogging seriously until I hit 10,000 followers on Instagram. In all honesty it took me a few years (about 3) to get to 10k followers. I know that doesn’t sound impressive at all and I’m not trying to be, I just want to be transparent about my blogging journey. At the time I didn’t focus on growing my audience, I was just doing it for enjoyment and mainly I did daily outfits to make sure I don’t wear the same outfit too often. I wish I started taking it more seriously even before I hit my goal as I know brands are willing to work with influence rs with smaller followings too. It’s not so much about the numbers as it’s about passion.
The way I managed to achieve my following was mostly with three main factors.
- Post everyday and try to post high quality images.
- Upload content within your niche e.g Sports, Lifestyle, Food, Fashion ect.
- Interact with your followers and follow similar accounts everyday.
After growing to 10,000 followers one of my Facebook friends offered to send me a free t-shirt from his brand. If he was willing to send me stuff I realised I can also get barter collaborations like this from other brands. So I started contacting small shops and brands offering to promote their products. One and a half years later and I have done over 100+ collabs with big retailers and small boutiques so I know this can work for anyone looking to put in the hard work.
The most important reason for my success is having good photography. I now use a Sony A6000 but you can use your smartphone too, do not be discouraged if you do not have the equipment. Keep trying and learning how to use the equipment you have available to you now. Creativity is priceless and is much more important than having expensive equipment. Also learn to edit your images on apps such a VCSO, Lightroom and Photoshop Fix, this is something crucial to learn as you will be needing alot of great photos for your blog and social media. All of these apps are free so there are no excuses, personally I use Photoshop Fix as it has so many great editing options.
Something that I know helped me along the way is uploading content regularly, as a fashion blogger I have to stay relevant by posting often for people to constantly see me on their feed. Some bloggers even post 3 to 5 times a day. As long as you are posting a min of 2 hours apart this should not only be seen by a wider audience (as people log in at different times ) but also increase your chances of going viral.
Lastly do not forget to interact with your followers and the people who you follow. Respond to people’s comments and collaborate with fellow bloggers. This is a great community and it’s so easy to reach out to people with the help of the DM.
Good Luck with your blog!
